Today in Music History, February 28

18 years ago today a little gem appeared on the U.S. music scene with the debut album from Jewel entitled Pieces of You.   The album contained a few hits including “Who Will Save Your Soul.” It became her first hit single, peaking at #11 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Jewel explained her creative process for “Who Will Save Your Soul” in an interview.

“When I was about sixteen years old I took a train from Michigan to San Diegeo and the into Tijuana and hitchhiked around Mexico. It seemed like everybody else was looking for somebody to save them. I wrote it during that trip, but I had no idea it would ever be on a record.”

Do you know Jewel’s last name?

By the way, Jewel can sing a mean national anthem as she did in Super Bowl 1998 in San Diego, her hometown.
