23 years ago, March 20, 1990, Canadian singer/songwriter Allanah Myles was atop the U.S. singles charts with “Black Velvet.”
The song is a commemorative story about Elvis Presley. The first verse discusses the beginning of Elvis’s life, the second talks about the height of his career, including a refererence to the Elvis hit; Love Me Tender.
The song’s title references Elvis’ hair but also the many images made of The King on black velvet cloth which are sold in Memphis. It is has won awards for an incredible number of radio air plays. By 2005 it had already achieved more than four million radio plays.
